How to Keep Tooth Decay Away From Your Toddler

Caring for our kids can be a full-time job. Not only do you need to be prepared for a doctor’s visit, but you have to maintain the health of your child outside of an appointment as well.

Your kid’s teeth are something you want to pay special attention to. Keeping tooth decay away can be tricky, so you need to know what to look out for. One way to ensure your child’s oral health is in good standing is to learn how to stop tooth decay in toddlers.

Here we look at how to care for your child’s teeth while they’re young.

Limit Sugary Foods and Drinks

Sugary drinks, including juices and sodas, have been linked to an increase in cavities in children. It is important to cut your toddler’s access to these types of drinks and to provide healthy alternatives such as water when they do get thirsty.

If you allow your toddler to consume fruit juices, water them down and let your toddler drink them through a straw, as this will help keep toddler tooth decay away. Limiting sugary snacks and treats such as cookies and candy can help minimize your toddler’s sugar intake.

Visit a Local Pediatric Dentist Regularly

Start by having your toddler’s teeth examined by a local Pediatric Dentist when they are six months old. This is when the first baby teeth should be visible. Regular cleanings and check-ups with a qualified pediatric dentist are important to ensure healthy teeth.

A pediatric dentist is specially trained to work on developing newly erupted teeth. They can offer advice on how to properly care for toddler’s teeth such as when to start using a toothbrush, an appropriate toothpaste, and other brushing techniques.

Most importantly, they can help with tooth decay prevention and can monitor your toddler’s teeth for any signs of tooth decay, and provide the necessary preventive treatments, such as fluoride applications, to keep your toddler’s teeth healthy.

Supervise Flossing

Begin by showing your toddler how to floss their teeth and remind them why it’s important by reinforcing the positive aspects of having clean teeth and a healthy smile. Demonstrate proper technique and remind them to interlace the floss between all teeth, making sure it’s in contact with the gums.

Allow them to take it into their own hands while you supervise and offer words of encouragement along the way. If they’re not used to it, don’t force them to do it.

Position them in a comfortable position so they can take their time and get used to the process. Make it fun and keep a routine.

Establish a Regular Brushing Routine

Starting at a young age, help your toddler to understand the importance of oral hygiene and create a habit of brushing at least twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush and a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste. It is a good idea to brush their teeth after breakfast and before bed.

Help them to learn how to brush properly by demonstrating on their teeth, making sure to reach all surfaces. Flossing can be very helpful in removing food particles that can otherwise cause plaque and decay.
